Ice Can Save Lives

I read this in today’s Wall Street Journal, 6-Oct.

About 300,000 American’s suffer cardiac arrest outside a hospital each year. CPR is attempted in about 40% of the cases. Normally, less than half of those survive. Therapeutic hypothermia is an attempt to increase those odds. After about 24 hours rewarming begins.

Doctors say people who wouldn’t survive without the procedure are alive and free of brain damage.

How It Works:

The body is cooled with cold blanket technology, intravenous fluids or even ice. Drugs are used to induce a temporary coma.

Cold prevents damage to the brain that can result from blood flow restarting.

The body is rewarmed in about 8 hours.

I found this in the “Personal Journal” section of the Wall Street Journal.

I find this amazing.
